Malcolm McLaren

10th April 2010

Malcolm McClaren died at the age of 64 on Thursday in Switzerland after battling with a recently diagnosed malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

Malcolm

Malcolm famously came to the public's attention in the early 1970's after starting the clothes shop Let it Rock on the Kings Road in London with Vivienne Westwood.
Soon afterwards Malcolm was approached by a new young band called The Strand (later to become known as Sex Pistols), who asked for some guidance and advice.
In 1974 the shop was renamed SEX and Malcolm had a short stint at managing/advising the New York Dolls on their home turf where they ceremoniously split a few months later.

Adam Ant first met Malcolm whilst trying to supplement his time at art college by selling jewellery in the shop. Several years later Malcolm was employed as an advisor for Adam and as a result commandeered the band leaving Adam "Antless".
Malcolm continued with Bowwowwow whilst Adam's route produced Kings of the Wild Frontier.

Malcolm then ventured into music himself and released the albums Duck Rock, Fans, Waltz Darling and Paris.
He also worked on several film projects, TV shows and Radio programmes. He considered running for the post of Mayor of London in 2000 and in late 2009 produced Shallow; a collection of musical paintings.

Uncut Magazine

31st March 2010

Just hitting the streets today is the new issue of UK based music magazine Uncut, which features a 3 page article on the making of the Kings of the Wild Frontier single in 1980.

Uncut Magazine - May 2010 issue

Journalist Nick Hasted contacted Adam-ant.net back in November 2009 trying to track down all the members of the band from that time to interview them about the making of this first single from the newly put together Ant/Marco version of Adam and the Ants.
Within two weeks the feature was ready.

Although the Kings single was the definitive Ants sound that summer, it only peaked at number 48 in the UK chart.
It wasn't until after the release and success of Dog Eat Dog in October that the re-issue of the Kings single made it to number 2.

Adam: I was elated. It didn't sound like any record I'd ever heard. We had our own sound. We all felt like Kings.

The quote of the feature:
Pirroni: I'm still untouched by the ordinary world, thanks to "Kings of the Wild Frontier".

Uncut is out now.

Ant update

28th March 2010

It's been a busy time for Adam recently, starting around three weeks ago on the 7th March with an auction that was held in aid of the St John's Wood Hospice. Adam helped raise over £1200 for the charity by selling a few items from his personal collection of jewellery.
The following Thursday night Adam was spotted outside The Ivy on West Street, central London, where he was photographed sporting his new "Armed" suit jacket by Social Suicide which is part of their new Dictators of Fashion range.

After visiting the Art Bin installation that Sunday night Adam made his first live performance since the Bloomsbury Theatre in 2007 at Through the Looking Glass bookshop as detailed in the last news item.
This was followed the night after where he took to the stage with Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction at The Pipeline to sing with them for a rendition of Prime Mover, the band's 1987 hit single.

Saturday night and Adam was playing again, this time at Southwark Playhouse to join in on one of the regular Shore Leave events.
Adam played versions of Physical, Young Parisians, Cartrouble, Cleopatra plus covers of Buddy Holly's Peggy Sue and Peanuts Wilson's Cast Iron Arm for his half hour set.
Pictured below is Adam preparing for the show with photographer and party organiser Daniel Lismore.

Daniel and Adam

Adam had announced the show a few days earlier and as a result fans travelled from as far as continental Europe and north America.

The night after there was another surprise appearance at the Monarch in Camden where Adam joined heavy metal and rock covers band Metalworks on stage to give a repeat of Zodiac Mindwarp's Prime Mover and then finished off the night with a cover of Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild.

After a night off Adam was photographed outside The Groucho Club on Dean Street with Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding, the press reported on Wednesday that Adam was indeed back in the studio again after an absence of 16 years.

Art Bin

17th March 2010

Adam at the South London Gallery

Sunday 14th March was the final day of London based artist Michael Landy's latest installation Art Bin which had been running at the South London Gallery on Peckham Road for 6 weeks.

The above photo featured in the Evening Standard, donated by Ant fan Lucifer, shows Adam working on the last item of art, a collage, to be "disposed" of to close the piece.

Michael Landy's installation started 29th January 2010

All of the art in the 600m cubed perspex skip is destined for landfill and includes work by Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin and Gillian Wearing, all card carrying members of the crassly named YBA's.
Landy famously destroyed all of his belongings in 2001 in a piece entitled Break Down where he crushed, shredded and dismantled everything that he owned on public display in an old branch of the retail outlet C&A in Oxford Street.
